The registry does not know the status of a disk drive whether or not it is removable or fixed. I have installed Office on a partition that was referred to by Windows as a logical drive. Installed Office on a second or third HD installed in the same case. True the program files can be transported to another machine but would not run on another machine. The question was not if Office on a memory stick could be run on any computer. Rather can the program be installed on a memory stick. I say yes it can, but will only run on the Windows system that the registry files will match the install. -----Original Message----- From: mso-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:mso-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of James S. Many programs exist in exe files. They don't need The Registry. Any configuration information that needs to be saved from execution to execution, or shared with other programs, are store in files, frequently simple text files (e.g., ini files). But if you allowed that, people would load the programs onto whatever is the latest equivalent of a floppy, and carry that program around from computer to computer using it. That could reduce sales. The solution is simple. Develop ways to limit this behavior, to anchor the program to a single machine. The requirement for The Registry is one such technique. James S.
