Suzanne, your subject about normalizing a database intrigued me cause I have just gone through this myself in two ways. One was I had to build a whole new database and remembered having read some things on normalization so I started the new database according to proper normalization rules (with alot of help from below link). It worked out so well and was so easy to build forms and reports around that I wanted to go back and normalize my existing databases, cause I was beginning to see I had way too much repeating data, I did not have IDs set up right and it was no wonder my forms and queries were so hard to work out. Normalizing my existing database is proving to be far more difficult than building a whole new database, but I'm convinced it is worth it. Not only for the knowledge of learning how to do it, but for the database itself, for efficiency, data integrity, reducing database bloat . . . . and so on. That being said, if you are wanting a good link to normalization articles and how to's, here is one that has been very helpful to me. I'm hoping this will enhance the great help Glenda has provided in getting your queries set up to split the data. You have exactly the right idea with the tables and it should be a big help! If I hadn't just been through it and measured the benefits, I wouldn't have known how important it is. hth, Cathy http://www.utteraccess.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=accessfaq&Number=373096&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&fpart=1 "DiMarco, Suzanne " <SDiMarco@Christian To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx acare.org> Sent by: cc: mso-bounce@freelist s.org Subject: [mso] Access 2002 normalizing a database 11/04/2004 08:47 AM Please respond to ..... mso I have a database with a table that consists of patient information and rental transaction information. There's a lot of patient duplication since 1 patient can have many transactions. I want to split the table into two. From articles I've read so far I know I have to run a few queries to accomplish this (I don't know code). I need help with creating the queries. Does anyone know of any articles or web sites that could help me with this. Thank you very much.
