Thanks, I sure wish I'd known about normalization earlier, but . . . I'm not looking back, just ahead to better databases! Glad the link helped. THANKS Cathy. /g -----Original Message----- From: Cathy.Evans@xxxxxxxxx [mailto:Cathy.Evans@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, November 04, 2004 10:49 AM To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [mso] Re: Access 2002 normalizing a database Suzanne, your subject about normalizing a database intrigued me cause I have just gone through this myself in two ways. One was I had to build a whole new database and remembered having read some things on normalization so I started the new database according to proper normalization rules (with alot of help from below link). It worked out so well and was so easy to build forms and reports around that I wanted to go back and normalize my existing databases, cause I was beginning to see I had way too much repeating data, I did not have IDs set up right and it was no wonder my forms and queries were so hard to work out. Normalizing my existing database is proving to be far more difficult than building a whole new database, but I'm convinced it is worth it. Not only for the knowledge of learning how to do it, but for the database itself, for efficiency, data integrity, reducing database bloat . . . . and so on. That being said, if you are wanting a good link to normalization articles and how to's, here is one that has been very helpful to me. I'm hoping this will enhance the great help Glenda has provided in getting your queries set up to split the data. You have exactly the right idea with the tables and it should be a big help! If I hadn't just been through it and measured the benefits, I wouldn't have known how important it is. hth, Cathy http://www.utteraccess.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=3D <http://www.utteraccess.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=3D&Board=3Daccessfaq&= Num ber=3D373096&page=3D0&view=3Dexpanded&sb=3D5&o=3D&fpart=3D1> &Board=3Daccessfaq&Number=3D373096&page=3D0&view=3Dexpanded&sb=3D5&o=3D&f= part=3D1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain proprietary, business-confidential and/or privileged material.
