Hi there All, A friend of a friend (isn't it always the way) is wanting to do a bit of traction engine boiler building. He sounds like he is reasonably clued up, well researched and compentent - so I have no reason to doubt that he will go ahead with his endeavors, however:- * He has some rivets for building the boiler with, but he himself has a friend whose boiler started shedding it's rivet heads! * On invgestigation, it turned out that rivet heads were being shed as they had the wrong carbon content (so I'm told) and were intended for bridge building work. * The friend of a friend would like to make sure that the rivets he has are suitable for boiler building before commencing work. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have already voiced my opinion to the friend that if in doubt, buy some new ones from a reputable source (possibly Newtons) as the cost of rivets must be such a small part of the time and materials involved in building a boiler - but wondered what other people thought. I realise that this isn't model engineering, but I hope the group won't mind my posting this, as it is loosely related (Alan et al - if you're not happy then feel free to hit the delete key rather than posting it).
