The
driver called for assistance but the crew did not remove the fire from the 
firebox (a
process known as dropping the fire) until after the responsible officer in 
charge of
the railway had arrived.
by the sound of that, it sounds like they actually shoveled the coal out of the 
firebox onto the rails.
