Go to yamahasynth.com.

Click on Downloads.

Scroll down to, and click on "USB-MIDI Driver V2.2.1 for Windows XP/
2000
". This driver works for most all Yamaha keyboards.

I would suggest that you download the Universal MIDI driver from
YamahaSynth.com. Particularly for the ES, the driver on the CD that came
with the ES is close to 4 years out of date. The ES's USB driver is not
too friendly when it comes to sharing resources with other hardware in
your computer.

Hi: doesn't the Yamaha universal midi driver come with the motif
es on the CD, or is this an updated one that is necessary? I already
have the original driver installed. John Fioravanti

Here is how you get a basic setup going between your
Motif and Sonar. Each of these steps will take a bit of investigation on
your own.

The driver that you need is the Yamaha Universal MIDI
driver. Download the driver from YamahaSynth.com.

Run the installer that you downloaded so that the
drivers will be loaded on the computer.

On the Motif, go to Utility Mode, F5 Remote, SF1 DAW,
and set the type to Sonar. Press SF2 remote, and set MIDI in/out to USB.
Press Store. I think that these screens SF1 and SF2 are reversed on the
ES.

Connect the Motif to the computer. Let Windows detect
the Motif and load the drivers.

In Sonar, go to Options|MIDI Devices. Make sure that
Yamaha USB inputs 1 through 3 are selected in both the input and output
lists.

Still in Sonar, go to Options|Instruments. Press the
define button. Press the import button. Select either the Motif ES or
the Motif XS instrument definition (download it from moaccess.info if
you don't have it). Once the instrument definitions have been imported,
select all 16 channels on Yamaha port 1 and assign them the instrument
type of Motif ES or XS. Close out of Instrument Options.

Still in Sonar, go to Options|Control Surfaces. Press
add. Select Mackie Control. Set the input and output ports to Yamaha
port 02. Make sure that all of the WAI options are unchecked. Close out
of Control Surfaces.

On the Motif, go into Song Mode. Select an empty song.

You're now ready to sequence with Sonar.

Additionally, if you want the Motif to be able to sync
its synth engine and effects to Sonar, on the Motif, go to Utility Mode,
F5 Remote, SF2 MIDI, and set MIDI Sync to MIDI. The internal sequencers
in the Motif won't work until you switch MIDI Sync back to internal.

This will get you going with MIDI and control surface
functions.

There is a lot more to know. For example, when you
change mix settings on the Motif, you need to get those settings saved
into your Sonar project. That, though, requires that you dump the Motif
mix into your Sonar project as a bulk dump. I've written a dump request
macro to automate this, but haven't written up instructions for using it
yet. There is also a lot of other info to learn if you want to get mLAN
working with Sonar. However, don't worry about getting it all working
right away. Basic MIDI sequencing is a great starting place.

On a side note, it is a shame that we have to memorize
so much to work the Motif. I'm glad that it is possible for us to have
access to all of this, even if it requires lots of memorization, but
that does put us at some strong disadvantages. For example, when a
sighted person uses a Motif, it is a very simple process (not too far
beyond using a tape recorder), for them to record with the Motif's
sequencer. For them, connecting to a computer is a head ache that is to
be suffered so that they can use multitrack audio and softsynths with
their Motif. For new blind Motif players, though, it is almost easier to
get them hooked up to a talking environment on a computer (like Sonar or
QWS), rather than explain to them how to use the Motif's sequencer. Now,
a blind person can eventually use the sequencer almost as well as a
sighted person. In fact I can work very quickly with mine, and prefer to
write with the Motif rather than Sonar. However, I just find it strange
how blind people must learn the Motif from the opposite direction as
sighted players.

                Bryan

Hi, list members, i'd like to know how to properly
install the u s b driver for the motif es since i'll be using the motif
with sonar version 6? I would appreciate any information that any one
has.
