Adium does work very well, but you need to understand the way to make it work. 
So when you are in a chat window, you need to deactivate cursor tracking with 
VO shift f3, and leave your vo cursor in that unknown area where the message 
history appears. Then you can type whatever you want and your vo cursor will 
always be in the right place, meaning that you will be able to browse through 
all messages with the standard vo reading commands. Let us know if you need
