I was getting no startup screen, the option key did not bring up a boot menu. However, by holding down command option p r at startup, the machine came up talking with Voiceover again. I am sure that this key combination is familiar to experienced Mac users, so I'm glad I found out about it as well. I think that I'll pay the fine folks at the Apple store to install Windows the next time around!
