actually sir, this keystroke come from the old lc580 days and it is
called the parameter ram. which most of your control pannel settings
were stored in the 4meg rom chip next to the physical ram. so when you
press the ctrl option p and r it zapped it and all your extensions and
control pannel settings were set to default.

It's called resetting the power ram and no, it's not familiar to all
experienced mac users because many of us have never needed it but
thanks for
the tip.

I've been able to recover from a bad windows install with out it.

A few days back I had written about the way I completely messed up my
Mac
Mini by trying to install Windows Vista with Bootcamp.
I was getting no startup screen, the option key did not bring up a boot
menu.
However, by holding down command option p r at startup, the machine
came up
talking with Voiceover again.
I am sure that this key combination is familiar to experienced Mac
users, so
I'm glad I found out about it as well.
I think that I'll pay the fine folks at the Apple store to install
Windows
the next time around!

Thanks.
