Hi
The application itself is quite a bit better than the install. It has its quirks, but nothing like that. Also just FYI, the behavior you got in not being able to read anything, and the continue/quit buttons, is standard for these carbon-based installers. In other words, you may eventually see one again *shudder* :). The most important advice I can give you about the Read Iris application itself is this: after recognizing your current document, before you scan anything else, press command+n for new document. If you don't the program might crash. Note this does not mean you need to do this after every page, just after every recognition (i.e. after you press command+r). Most of the program itself though should be easy enough to understand.
I use Read Iris for all my OCR tasks, so just shout if you need help :).

Ok, I finally got it to install. However, here are some warnings:

(1) the dialog where I got stuck was actually apparently the one before
the "agree" "disagree"; it did have "print" and "save" in it. Jacob's
directions basically work except when they don't--*grin*. I think it may be important to stop interacting with the scroll area before traveling to
the continue button but I'm not sure.

(2) the info in the install dialogs is basically not readable; for
instance after the agreement is done you can see a "select folder" button but you can't read where it's planning to install; fortunately it picked
standard install locations but since I didn't see a place to choose my
destination I was afraid it might accidentally try for one of my external
drives.

(3) After I clicked "install" my computer went busy and the installer
dialog was pretty much unreadable; I just got "busy" and "ready" and maybe once in a while "application" or "stop". This state lasted for so long I
finally forced it to quit and did it over. The second time I waited it
out.

(4) It appears that you don't get a dialog telling you the install is
finished and giving you a nice "close" button. Instead you get "continue" or "quit" choices. Be warned that continue takes you back to the install
step again; quit is the one you want to choose.

I certainly hope I like the application better than I liked the install!!!
