Whoa, weird, , have you tried resetting things to defaults in the energy saver preferences? I believe there's a button to do that. Or I'm sure there's a Plist file that has those settings, try deleting that, and see what happens then?

And, when you close the lid, it does not stay in the sleep mode, you can hear the computer making its waking up sound with the lid closed.
