Yes, Buddy! That’s how I now understand the thing, myself. Sorry for the
alphabetic confusion. Hopefully the thing from Amazon that Carlos showed me
willl do the trick.
Thanks again, all who responded.

OK, maybeI can clear this up.
The MacBook Pros since about 2017, and some a bit earlier, have had USBC
ports. They don’t have USB A ports at all, so you need an adapter to go from
USB A to USBC. The USBC end is male, that is, plugs into the Mac. The other
end of the adapter will be USB A female, to accept the standard USB A thumb
drive connector.
The iPad Pro also uses USBC, but the standard iPad and Minis do not. They,
like the iPhones, use Lightning connectors.

The iphone connectors are not usb at all, they are lightning. On
Braille displays, you may find mini or micro usbs. The Micro ones
have two teets on one side of the plug, so they are easy to put in.
usb-a are the old style connectors from the 90s and usb-b ones are
usually found on devices to be hooked up to desk top computers, just
to make it more confusing. usb-c are small connectors on macbooks,
compatible with thunderbolt, although I am not positive they are the
same. This is what I THINK I know, I hope its not too confusing. Now
USB sticks can come in various connectors, so you may need eyeballs to
tell which one or check the model number which should tell you exactly
what kind of connector it has. Aira is great for such tasks.

I guess I have the letter designations wrong, but, yes, that sounds like
what I need. If I extrapolate correctly, are the “mini-USB” ports, such as
those found on Braille displays and the like, designated USB-B ports?, and
are lightning bolt ports, such as the one on my iPhone, designated USB-D?
Is there a guide to all this? I’m sorry to sound so stupid, but that’s just
because I am that stupid. :)

So, you need a usb-a female to usb-c male which should plug into your

No. My flash drive, a “memory stick,” has a USB male connector, that is
designed to go in a USB port, like one might find on a desktop computer.
It’s not Mini-USB, or Thunderbolt or any of the smaller kind. It is a
memory stick flash drive designed to plug directly into the computer.
It’s male connector is too large to plug into the MacBook Air’s female
Thunderbolt port.
I’m getting more and more confused, between letters, genders and sizes.

Hi. I’m sorry for not explaining correctly. Frankly, I get the
different sizes and names of ports mixed up. So, here, in more detail,
is what I mean.
My MacBook Air has two female Thunderbold ports. They are the
next-to-smallest size, the only ones that are smaller are the Lightning
bolt ports on my iPhone.
I have a flash drive; not a hard drive, an 8G flash drive with a male
connector on the end, which is the largest size, meant to go to a
standard USB port, like what you might find on an iMac. So this
connection on my flash drive is too large to fit into the side of my
MacBook Air.
I want to stick the flash drive into the MacBook and get the data off
it onto my SD drive, but I can’t. I want an adapter that lets me do
this. It would have the largest size female receptacle on one end, and
a male, smaller-sized, Connector on the other end, which I could plug
into the side of my MacBook.
I hope this makes it clearer what I”m trying to accomplish.

Mark,
I think there’s a confusion here. Your 2019 machine has two USB-C
ports, which support thunderbolt. My point is that if you say you’re
trying to use a hard drive that has a USB see cable I don’t understand
why you can’t just plug it into your computer directly. Can you
explain? A USB-C port is just a physical connection. It supports USB
3.x and earlier, as well as Thunderbolt.

Thanks, Carlos. Once again, I need to be sure that the USB-C end is
female, to mate with my flash drive. I bought a USB-C to VGA adapter
cable, and it came with two male ends, so I couldn’t mate my flash
drive to it, even if it had been the right size, which it wasn’t. How
can I be sure I’m getting the right genders with this adapter?

Hi, list:
I have a MacBook Air 2019, which has two Thunderbolt ports. I have
a flash drive with a USB-C male connector, and I need to get the
info off it and transferred to my Air. How the HECK do I do this?
Is there a converter cable I can buy, if so, where can I get it? I
am also having what I think might be Bluetooth connectivity issues
between my MacBook and my Focus Blue, which might be most easily
solved by a hardwire connection, but am running up against the same
problem of mismatched USB ports. Please help, I’m really not sure
how to fix this...
