Hi, Carlos. Yes, this agrees with what John has corrected me about, concerning
the designations of the different types of USB ports. However, once again, I
can’t tell from the product description whether the genders are correct.
Thanks!

It sounds to me like your USB drive is USB A. This is a rectangular plug
that has been around since the late 90s. USB C or thunderbolt is a newer and
much smaller connecter. As I mentioned, there are adapters that you can get
to plug USB A plugs into USB C ports. If I’m misinterpreting what you mean,
please correct me. Otherwise, check out the link below to see if this item
will meet your needs.

No. My flash drive, a “memory stick,” has a USB male connector, that is
designed to go in a USB port, like one might find on a desktop computer.
It’s not Mini-USB, or Thunderbolt or any of the smaller kind. It is a memory
stick flash drive designed to plug directly into the computer. It’s male
connector is too large to plug into the MacBook Air’s female Thunderbolt
port.
I’m getting more and more confused, between letters, genders and sizes.

You need usb-a mail to usb-c male. Let me restate, your hard drive
has a usb-a female connector and your macbook has a usb-c female
connector -- correct?

Hi. I’m sorry for not explaining correctly. Frankly, I get the different
sizes and names of ports mixed up. So, here, in more detail, is what I
mean.
My MacBook Air has two female Thunderbold ports. They are the
next-to-smallest size, the only ones that are smaller are the Lightning
bolt ports on my iPhone.
I have a flash drive; not a hard drive, an 8G flash drive with a male
connector on the end, which is the largest size, meant to go to a standard
USB port, like what you might find on an iMac. So this connection on my
flash drive is too large to fit into the side of my MacBook Air.
I want to stick the flash drive into the MacBook and get the data off it
onto my SD drive, but I can’t. I want an adapter that lets me do this. It
would have the largest size female receptacle on one end, and a male,
smaller-sized, Connector on the other end, which I could plug into the
side of my MacBook.
I hope this makes it clearer what I”m trying to accomplish.

Mark,
I think there’s a confusion here. Your 2019 machine has two USB-C ports,
which support thunderbolt. My point is that if you say you’re trying to
use a hard drive that has a USB see cable I don’t understand why you
can’t just plug it into your computer directly. Can you explain? A USB-C
port is just a physical connection. It supports USB 3.x and earlier, as
well as Thunderbolt.

Thanks, Carlos. Once again, I need to be sure that the USB-C end is
female, to mate with my flash drive. I bought a USB-C to VGA adapter
cable, and it came with two male ends, so I couldn’t mate my flash drive
to it, even if it had been the right size, which it wasn’t. How can I be
sure I’m getting the right genders with this adapter?

Hello there. I have a USB c to USB A adapter. This works great for
connecting any of my USB A devices, including flash drives. You can
get these adapters from several places including amazon and Apple.
Hope this helps.

Hi, list:
I have a MacBook Air 2019, which has two Thunderbolt ports. I have a
flash drive with a USB-C male connector, and I need to get the info
off it and transferred to my Air. How the HECK do I do this? Is there
a converter cable I can buy, if so, where can I get it? I am also
having what I think might be Bluetooth connectivity issues between my
MacBook and my Focus Blue, which might be most easily solved by a
hardwire connection, but am running up against the same problem of
mismatched USB ports. Please help, I’m really not sure how to fix
this...
