Thanks, Ignasi; thanks to you, Carlos and John, I’m getting a better idea of
what I need.

Mark,
There’s a cheap Amazon Basics adapter that does exactly what you need. Search
for it on Amazon and you will find it. It should be called something along
the lines of USB-C to USB 3.1 adapter, or similar. You don’t need to spend
money on the official Apple adapter. I personally like this one better, and
it costs a lot less.

Hi. I’m sorry for not explaining correctly. Frankly, I get the different
sizes and names of ports mixed up. So, here, in more detail, is what I mean.
My MacBook Air has two female Thunderbold ports. They are the
next-to-smallest size, the only ones that are smaller are the Lightning bolt
ports on my iPhone.
I have a flash drive; not a hard drive, an 8G flash drive with a male
connector on the end, which is the largest size, meant to go to a standard
USB port, like what you might find on an iMac. So this connection on my
flash drive is too large to fit into the side of my MacBook Air.
I want to stick the flash drive into the MacBook and get the data off it
onto my SD drive, but I can’t. I want an adapter that lets me do this. It
would have the largest size female receptacle on one end, and a male,
smaller-sized, Connector on the other end, which I could plug into the side
of my MacBook.
I hope this makes it clearer what I”m trying to accomplish.

Mark,
I think there’s a confusion here. Your 2019 machine has two USB-C ports,
which support thunderbolt. My point is that if you say you’re trying to use
a hard drive that has a USB see cable I don’t understand why you can’t just
plug it into your computer directly. Can you explain? A USB-C port is just
a physical connection. It supports USB 3.x and earlier, as well as
Thunderbolt.

Thanks, Carlos. Once again, I need to be sure that the USB-C end is
female, to mate with my flash drive. I bought a USB-C to VGA adapter
cable, and it came with two male ends, so I couldn’t mate my flash drive
to it, even if it had been the right size, which it wasn’t. How can I be
sure I’m getting the right genders with this adapter?

Hello there. I have a USB c to USB A adapter. This works great for
connecting any of my USB A devices, including flash drives. You can get
these adapters from several places including amazon and Apple. Hope this
helps.

Hi, list:
I have a MacBook Air 2019, which has two Thunderbolt ports. I have a
flash drive with a USB-C male connector, and I need to get the info off
it and transferred to my Air. How the HECK do I do this? Is there a
converter cable I can buy, if so, where can I get it? I am also having
what I think might be Bluetooth connectivity issues between my MacBook
and my Focus Blue, which might be most easily solved by a hardwire
connection, but am running up against the same problem of mismatched USB
ports. Please help, I’m really not sure how to fix this...
