Both dictation and Siri are supposed to be the cure-all for IPhone, but I find
it pretty tough to dictate if i’m working from our cafe or on the bus. It’s
either more isolating because folks actively ignore you, or it invites
eavesdropping.
I find myself using dictation on my mac when I have type similar things over
and over again. I just get tired of typing the same response to say, a
volunteer saying they can’t make their shift. I actually have a text
replacement set up on my phone for when I’m responding, but on my Mac it’s just
as fast to dictate it.
One thing I found, it actually doesn't help to speak slowly when using
dictation, it seems to do a better job if you speak with a natural rhythm. My
guess is it has something to do with the algorithms they use for speech
recognition. I have actually tried speaking super quickly, and there is a point
at which it no longer recognizes the text, it seems to happen more on short
words then on long ones when you're speaking quickly.
I just rattled off those last couple phrases, and this one, and it picked it up
no matter how fast I was talking. I guess this could be a real advantage as
long as you can think as fast as you speak, could be a real timesaver when it
comes to getting long blocks of text into the computer.
Cheers,
Ian

Interesting, I like the idea of using Dictation but need to find where it is
most useful, quick notes so far, email seems more efficient with Dictation
than Siri. I am going to keep it open for a while.

I did a little more digging, and found that if you are using enhanced
dictation it does indeed take a while to load resources into active memory.
I figure that Apple has all of my data anyways, and can do whatever they
want with it, so I might as well use the server based dictation if I'm on
line. It also has the convenience of having your address book names, so it
has odd spellings already loaded.
Seems to be a much snappier response using non-in Hanst dictation. That
seems an odd thing to call it, nonenhanced, but standard dictation doesn't
seem to be what they call it either.
Thanks for the wisdom,
Ian.

I am on my iMac.
Seems that the response to dictation is different between the two apps,

What I’m noticing is that if I havne’t used dictation for a while, like if
it’s the first tiem of the day, I activate with a double tap of the FN
key, but then there is a long delay before the indicator beep. After this
if I hit the shortcut the beep comes right away. Then if I haven’t used
dicatation for a while, the delay comes back.

Don't know, I use Siri but seldom Dictation.
I notice with Dictation that it does not appear to respond to my initial
phrase but does to the second, or perhaps third. Is this what you have
noticed and are trying to correct ?

OK, I just turned off Siri. Seems like the choppy read back is gone, but
it was intermitent anyways so we’ll see if it comes back.
The SIRI information pane in system preferences says you can use SIRI to
dictate a note, whats’ the syntax for this?

Have you also got Siri turned on, if so turn it off and see if there is

I’m currently set to enhanced, but I’ve noticed it with enhanced and

Do you have any thoughts as to which is more likely to have the delay?
With enhanced dictation turned off I’m getting a different beep tone
at start, and a choppy read back of my dictated text as I speak.

Hello list, I know this is something that has been referenced
before, but I can't find it in the archives. in working with
dictation on Mac, there is a delay before it beeps if you haven't
used dictation for a while, sometimes as soon as only a few minutes
after you last used it. Does anyone know what causes this Delay, and
if there is a way to keep the microphone primed as it were so that
this delay doesn't happen?
Thanks,
Ian
