I use Pages for both IOS and Mac, so I can hand off my projects, ddepending on
where I’m working on something. As. Rule, the formatter is easily accessed in
IOS by turning QuickNav on and starting from the top left of the screen. It’s
pretty straightforward; if you can’t find something, the “more,” button is your
friend. Mac is almost as easy, with VO-J, as we’ve talked about. And, yes, the
Items Chooser on IOS does appear to be either broken or work in some way I
haven’t discovered yet.

BTW, I have had problems with the items chooser in the last few Mac OS
builds, and have never gotten it to work right in IOS. I used to use it all
the time, but lately it doesn’t seem to be functioning the same way. Not
sure how to elucidate on this, except to say that it doesn’t seem to move
the cursor to the item I choose, after I write in the search field, and in
fact the search fieldsometimes doesn’t seem to accept my text. *shrug* not
sure what’s up with this.

Another shortcut is to use your item chooser with VO I. If you know your
format inspector is open, VO I then type in the first few letters of the
control you need to jump to, like par should narrow it down to paragraph
style, bul for the bullets and numbering area, then VO space to select it..
Saves a bit of arrowing and interacting. I guess that’s our equivalent to
quickly jumping to something, you just need to know what the control is
called. I remember to do this maybe 1 time out of 5, usually accompanied by
a forehead slap and, why didn’t I do this before.

In Pages headings are a paragraph style, you access it through the
formatter. Here are the steps I use:
Highlight the text you want to turn into a heading.
VO J to get to the formatter.
If it says text, body, paragraph as you VO right arrow, you are in the
right formatter.
If it says document, section, bookmarks, you have the format inspector
set to document setup, you’ll need to change it in the View menu,
inspector sub menu.
Once you are in the format inspector, VO arrow until you find the
paragraph style button, might say body selected paragraph style, mine
usually does.
VO space the paragraph styles button, a dialogue will open up.
VO right arrow to the paragraph styles table, interact, VO down arrow to
the style you want and VO space on it.
There are 3 heading levels to choose from, you can also create custom
ones or update the default, but I’ve just been making do with the preset
ones.
VO J to get back to your body, Voiceover should read your heading.
Tips and tricks
I shortcut the process once I’ve done a heading once, highlight a word in
the heading, then do command option C to copy style, then highlight the
text you want to be the new matching heading and do command option V to
paste style. You don’t have to copy the style again, just keep repeating
command option V as you need it. Like clipboard text, the copied style
will be ready to use until you copy a different style.
