Hi Gary! Thanks for your idea. In my case that's not possible because I have a
retina MacBook 15 from mid 2015. I already have 16GB RAM, I7 2.8 GHZ and a
512GB SSD. So I'm a bit amazed that voiceover is quite slow with this specifi
operation. And that's why I'm curious if other people here with similar or even
more up to date hardware experience the same.

I recently upgraded my 2013 macbook pro with 8gb memory. didn’t upgrade the
memory, but did replace the 900 GB hard disk with a 1 TB solid state.
it was like getting a new machine.
Nex I will upgrade the memory to 16 GB.
Currently I have seen solid state disks 1TB for around $150. Certainly
cheaper than buying a new mac.

There are many possibilities why you are experiencing a sluggish machine.
Firstly I don't understand what you mean by pressing those keys you
mention. To turn quicknav on or off you only need to press the left and
right arrows at the same time. To access the voiceover options you press
shift control options and command at the same time.
Secondly you could open Accessibility preferences and go to keyboard and
make sure sticky keys and slow keys are not checked.
