John, oddly enough I sometimes cannot tab from the message list to the mailbox
list, however shift tabbing always seems to work, weird.

Most of the time, the tab key will work. However, the tab key doesn't
always work in Lion. For some reason, many users have indicated that they
cannot navigate in mail between the Mailbox list, message list and message
content areas with the tab key.
I use the tab key myself, but I always suggest folks using the VO arrow keys
because they will work more reliably.
