Here's the link about the library situation in Oregon.

I have a friend who is being affected by this. She has sent out emails
wondering what it is like to work for LSSI.?

What puzzles me is that the library board could have instrumented some of the
same cost-saving issues that LSSI is doing--and been able to remain open with
some of the same integrity that has allowed for professional librarians to be
involved. (LSSI typically chops professionals and instead hires clerical help.
This is not necessarily a bad thing--alot of good online reference work is
being done now to help alleviate the needs--but one of the main points of a
public library is to assist those who do not have access to information--and we
(in my world) have seen pretty appalling results when the untrained try to help
with beyond the basics...

It's an interesting situation.

Has anyone in Portland gone to the Ecomotion dealership, yet?? They are selling
electric cars--and I keep thinking the ZAK sedan for $10,000 looks interesting
and reasonable for a teenage boy next year...(and 40 miles per hour--it's for
the city, after all--there is one that goes 70 mph but not as nice looking--at
least from the pictures nor does it seat four)? They just opened this
dealership--wondered how it was doing.

Best,
Marlena in Missouri

Here we're looking forward and backward simultaneously. In southern Oregon,
Jackson County has closed libraries because the Feds stopped paying "don't cut
trees" subsidies and the locals refused a levy. They're now re-opening them
under contract to a for-profit company. Mercenary librarians, provided by
Blackwater, can't be far behind.?
