I never checked the site because you quote DID sound so real. That...and 
I think I've had quite enough of that stuff for one week.

Probably worth considering that the creationist-style ignorance and 
superstition (or much worse) was always out there. Nothing much has 
changed except the Internet and political support for the views.

It's like a house infested with vermin. Only recently somebody ripped up 
some floor boards in the library. What were once only scurrying, 
squeaking noises are now revealed to be colonies of albino mice and 
enormous waterbugs.

They were there before, but hadn't become a visible issue.
