i have been reading student papers
some of which are glorious
but in many
i am cited
like the stranger
who missed stop signs

on ellis island
immigrants
came
threw

Macaulay, Tevian, Fitche, and Heide
said nothing about union strikes
which became more prominant

japan was locked in futilism and
india was the gem of the britain
which caused advertising to explode in new york

trodsky was intercepted by Stalin
as quoted

Liberty
not wanted at the
sioux canal entrance
held high her flame

in her yellow kitchen i remember
trying
to draw
like history

and history
which allows
you to choose
now
who you are haunted by

David Ritchie,
Portland, Oregon
