I'm uncomfortable with all this energy wasted on labels.

I vote democratic. I think Bush has in 6 years wrought enormous world-wide
damage.

I support Israel's right to exist.

I have sympathy for the Palestinians -- no Arab country will let them in.

I have a difficult time not disagreeing with Israel's tactics, but I assume
there are military strategies in place that I am unaware of.

I am well aware of the strategy of Hezbollah not caring a whit about their
own lives or civilians and hiding weaponry in civilian areas.

The whole thing is a mess and I don't think anyone can be labeled in such a
complicated and complex situation. There simply are no black hats and white
hats.

Eric, the criticism is not that Lawrence speaks of "Left" and
"Right" but that his categorizations and generalizations are
crude and that he overhomogenizes "leftists". Your

> Not all leftists are counterculturalists and vice versa.
> Instead what defines counterculturalism is alienation.

doesn't seem much of an advance to me, frankly, though
it may be an advance of your

>Let me suggest "counterculturalist" instead of "leftist."

to which I responded, and which does not seem to me to meet
Carol's
point.
