On Windows logs should go in the user's profile temp directory. In fact I think 
there is a environment variable %temp% for the temp file location.

Yes, let's do that. /var/log/liblouis/ for Linux, and also for Mac OS if 
liblouis is installed in /usr/local/. If liblouis is installed as a Mac 
Application, /Library/Logs or ~/Library/Logs seems to be more standard.
