[liblouis-liblouisxml] LibLouisUTDML, macro nodes

Hello,
Whilst looking at the LibLouisUTDML source code I keep finding references to nodes having macros. What is a macro node and how to use this feature?
I did a search of the liblouisutdml documentation for the word macro and nothing came up.
