I would argue that this statement is always the case Eric...
a photo is always a miniscule selection of reality chosen by the
photographer...
as such it is a (carefully made) selection in time, space, content,
mood, cropping...
thought of in these terms, one realizes that a photo often tells you
more about the photographer than it does of the subject...

"When you photograph people in colour you photograph their clothes.
But when you photograph people in B&W, you photograph their souls!"
