IMHO, AWB is like auto-anything else: it's usually OK for the most generic
of situations but for critical work the auto-stuff falls short.

Agreed... but, even with "happy snaps", I end up correcting/improving
the colour temp (white balance) on more of my Canon shots than I ever
did with the DMR with v1.2!
For anything critical, I find, as you obviously do, that you must
always play with the WB to get things "just right".
