Hi Aram,

Thank you for your information. I will have a look at my dealer for a DK-21M
and fit it on my R8/DM-R to see what the
effect is in my viewfinder.

Kind regards

Fred Hess

Agree with David. I’ll pulled out my R8 to see how it fits, and I was
surprised that it does fit. I was surprised because, I have a right angle
finder for my R8 that is superb, but I had tried it on the Canon and I could
not get it to fit, so I bought a cheap, RA finder from China for my Canon and
it does not come close. All kinds of distortions, but in a pinch it does allow
me to see the viewfinder at 2x when the camera is close to the ground. I might
have to revisit the Leica finder on the Canon to see what modifications I can
make to the Canon to ease the fit. That would be wonderful.

Now, as I said, it does fit, but I do not see any real benefit. The R8/9
viewfinder is so bright and large that I do not see any real difference with
the DK-21M attached or not attached. Those are my eyes, so your eyes may vary.
I should pull out my R4 and see if it makes a difference on that. The
viewfinder in the R4 is very sub-R8 quality. Might make a difference.

Also , the fit is not perfect. The height of the Leica eyepieces is much
greater than the Canon or Nikon, so, while it does cover the actual eyepiece
lens enough to work and see the whole viewfinder, there is a lot of space below
that would allow stray dust and light to enter. Here is a picture showing this.

So, to sum it up, if you are having troubles with the R8/9 finder, this is a
cheap way to see if you can improve things. However, I suspect if you are
having troubles focusing with the R8/9, you are in need of an autofocus camera.

  Hope this clarifies things.

  Aram

  Hello David,

  Thank you for the information!

Does this magnifier, after some alterations, also fit Leica R8/9??

Have you any idea? Have you tried it?

  Kind regards

  Good Mornin' Fred!

I am sorry, but I have never tried it with the R8/R9. I found the finder in
the R8/9 finder good enough to never need an "aide". However, when I moved to
the 30D, I found the finder much harder to focus, with MF lenses. Aram had the
same problem with his Rebel XT, and discovered that the Nikon eyepiece both
fit, and did the job, rather well.

Optically, the DK-21M is a very good 1.2x magnifier, which really made a
difference, for me.

The finder on the Oly E3 is close to, but not up to, the quality of the R8/9
and I find no need for additional magnification, even when using the f6.8 400
Telyt in dim light. It's one of the main reasons I changed to Oly.

Douglas' Sharp's item is intriguing, but you may wish to try the Nikon DK-21M
before ordering the Seculine, if only because the Nikon item is 1/4 the price
(69.99 Euros =CAD $112.11. The DK-21M sells, here, for CAD$28) of the Seculine
piece, and is known to work very well. Eyepieces seem to be one of the few
things readily interchangeable between brands.

Please keep us posted as to what you purchase and how well it works with the
R8/R9.

  Cheers!
