Bob,

Thanks for looking and for the kind words.

Regarding safety: I find it ironic that when I go to the US (especially
Florida) I see more motorcyclists without helmets than with helmets,
while many cyclists there do wear a helmet.

Here in the Netherlands riding a bicycle is certainly safer than
anywhere else in the world. There are bike paths almost everywhere, and
in many places outside the big towns the bike path does not even run
along a road, but follows its own path (often a shorter route). In the
center of Amsterdam there is no room for physically separate bike paths,
but bicycles definitely rule. Car drivers are extremely conscious of
them, and when you learn to drive you are taught over and over again how
to look out for them (e.g. turn your head to check the blind angle
before turning right etc.). In any collission between a car and a
bicycle the car driver will almost always be deemed at fault, almost no
matter what the circumstances.

And finally, yes, I think the Dutch have a different perception of risk
than Americans. In the US the goal is to eliminate accident risks as
much as possible, partly due to the litigation culture--witness closed
playgrounds so children don't get injured and so on. Over here the
attitude is that life is inherently risky and a sensible tradeoff has to
be found betwen safety and convenience.
