THE GREAT MONARCH MIGRATION:
http://www.riverdeep.net/current/2000/09/092900_migrations.jhtml

What do Monarch butterflies do when they sense the com-
ing of autumn? They cannot turn up the heat, so they
must travel in search of warmer climes, as they would
become paralyzed and unable to fly in cold temperatures.
Learn about all of the factors involved in the great mi-
gration to California and Mexico, track their expected
latitudes as the fall days pass, and learn how Monarch
habitats are becoming endangered with encroaching human
developments. Three levels of quizzes on Monarch bio-
logy are also included.

7. TEACHER TO TEACHER

SUBMISSION FOR MAKING CELL MODELS:
"Hello. I thoroughly enjoy reading the Flyer on Thurs.!
In this issue, you gave a short description and the URL
of making 3D cells. I also know of another way; it is a
bit messy but the kids really enjoy it and the models look
great hanging from the ceiling in the classroom:
http://camillasenior.homestead.com/resources.html
When you get to the site, you will see many pdfs for a
variety of topics. The one you want is called, '3D cells
with balloons'."
Barb Jackson,
Webmaster

HELP NEEDED WITH STUDENT ADVISOR PROGRAMS:
"I very much need help with Middle School Advisor/Ad-
visee programs. I would appreciate any information or
help your readers could give to me. I need to know time
frames, what works and what doesn't, topics discussed or
done in sessions. Thanks so much!"

THE ELEANOR RIGBY PROJECT:
http://www.masters.ab.ca/bdyck/homeless

"'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses
yearning to breathe free... send these the homeless,
the tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the gol-
den door!'
-Emma Lazarus
(inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty)
The message of Lady Liberty still points us towards the
poor, the tired and the homeless. We see them on the
streets, cocooned in doorways, pushing overloaded shop-
ping carts, standing on corners announcing their troubles
on cardboard signs. Old, young, men, women.
- Who are they?
- Where did they come from?
- What circumstances put them on the street?
and most importantly:
- What keeps them there?
The Grade 7 students from Master's Academy in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada invite middle school students from all
over to join 'The Eleanor Rigby Project', a telecollab-
orative project that will introduce them to the real
people behind the homeless fa?ade. Participants will
study the facts, examine the stereotyping placed on
those who are homeless, and be introduced to people
who live on the streets. And after all the facts and
emotions have settled, they will be challenged to ask
themselves why we all have a strange feeling of discom-
fort each time we see a homeless person, and what we can
do to help.

ject Coordinator, Brenda Dyck, at: bdyck@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

MENTORING HELP NEEDED:
"Our school will be starting a mentoring project called
P.A.S.S. for Success, in which each school professional
will be given a group of 10 children to mentor for the
school year. This [project] is supposed to involve both
academic and social goal setting conducted in individual
conferences between mentor and mentored. I was wondering if
any of your readers know of a web site that would have
checklists, forms, etc. to help focus this goal setting.
Any help would be appreciated!"
Send suggestions to be included in this column. Write to:

HELP NEEDED PLANNING STUDENT READING MATERIAL LIST:
"Our school district is in the process of implementing
some type of committee that all student-assigned litera-
ture would pass through for approval for use in the class-
room. We have come to this point due to a recent parent
challenge to a novel used in the classroom. Anyone with
information about approved reading lists and guidelines
that your school district has for them would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you."

8. TEACHER FORUM

FORUM TOPIC -- CHANGING PUBLIC EDUCATION:
What one thing would you change about public education?
Send your responses to: classroomflyer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
for consideration for printing in this column.

RESPONSES . . .

EXCESSIVE TESTING!
"I'd get rid of all of this excessive testing we do. You
cannot teach because of all of the tests we must give. It's
gotten way out of control."
M. Cross

RESPONSIBLE FEEDBACK AND RESPONSE NEEDED:
"More feedback from psychologists regarding how the schools
are reinforcing inappropriate behaviors and the response
to recommendations, by the school district, to implement
needed changes; including parent participation."

MORE ORIENTATION TOWARD STUDENTS PLEASE:
"Sadly, education has become much more teacher-oriented
and much less student-oriented. Teachers must accommodate
student learning in so many ways that Special Education
has taken on a life of its own. The burden of testing in
my state is totally on the shoulders of the teachers; the
scores do not affect students in any way. How are we going
to teach students to be responsible, learn to cope with
failure, and feel pride in accomplishment if we continue
to shield them from the learning process?"
Sultana Schwartz
Aston, PA

HUMAN INTERACTION NEEDED:
"If I could change anything about public education, it
would be to stop stressing testing and to revisit the
human interaction that is what teaching is really about--
think apprenticeship."
Shannon Green,
Art Teacher (Formerly and ESOL Teacher)
Madison C-3 School
