why does jaws not say when someone is away on windows messenger?

afternoon or evening to all.
i am using jaws 6.20 and windows xp home and windows messenger.
I am having a strange issue.
on the main window of windows messenger i can tell when a person is set to away.
but here's the funny part.
when i go in to that person's conversation window to type jaws will not say, so
and so may not reply because his or her status is set to away.
can you tell me of a fix?
