Hi Rick:
This is a great question. I understand how to teach someone to use
various applications using JAWS, but I've always wondered, how do you
teach someone JAWS?
I guess I'd start by demoing JAWS, getting them used to the speech.
Then, I'd try to find out what skills the person has, if any with the
keyboard. In the scenario you describe, I would suspect very limited
keyboard skills. So, the first task it seems to me would be to teach
that person the keyboard, using JAWS as much as possible so they get
audible feedback. Once they learn the keyboard, then I'd teach them
some basic Windows stuff, then move onto e-mail, web browsing and other
applications. It all depends on what they want to be able to do with
the computer.
I believe initially, that some one on one training would be in order,
provided the person has a way to take notes. As they advance, you could
point them to training on-line and within JAWS as well as user
documentation and encourage them to learn more and try things on their
own.
Just some thoughts.
