If Your JAWS quits talking and it won't restart why not just turn the
computer off with the on off switch. If you are usings XP it won't hurt
anything at all. You may have to hold the button in for a little while to
get it to shut down if the computer is locked up but it works every time and
you don't have to remember any key strokes.

Does the classic logon change the shut down dialog in XP. It really bugs me that every version of windows has a different shutdown dialog.
Incase this seems off topic. Remember that our screen readers aren't always talking when we are trying to shut down so we need to know exact methods for every situation.

Let's not forget about the folks who use the classic logon screen. I happen to be one of them. Anyways, windows key, u, r, enter for restart, or windows key, u, home s, enter to shut down. The reason for the home key is so that you'll be at the top of the list, and therefore the shut down will always be selected when you hit s. Without the home key, you'll never know if stand by or shut down is selected.

oops, I think this is wrong. for windows XP, in the shutdown menu would be
stand by, button turn off, button restart, button hibernate, button cancel, button
your direction: windows key and then the letter u and press the enter
this only will bring to stand by option.
the correct one is: windows key, a letter u, and another letter u.

Hi:
Try pushing and releasing your power button quickly. Depending on how your system is set up, it should shut down the computer. Don't hold the power button in or it will shut off the computer without properly shutting down windows, you do not want to do that.

How do we force a shutdown when the system stops talking and we can't read the Task Manager? My new computer gets into a state where I can not shut down with windows key u u. or by ctrl alt del alt-u u.
Is there a better way to shut down safely when the system seems to hang?
