Dick,

Okay, that's simple.  It's the same service the other digital dictionaries 
offer, spoken pronunciation of the word.  Why, then, do they call it the 
"talking dictionary"?  I have a feeling that this one may be a different 
level of dictionary than the others, possibly intended primarily for school 
children. the lower price suggests a simpler dictionary, also. Does anyone 
know?

The only spoken thing in this Dictionary is the word you typed in.  this is
the word you are looking for the definition of.  The Word is only spoken if
you request it to be spoken, there is a button you click then the word is
spoken in a human voice the purpose for this is to let you know how to
pronounce the word.
You do not shut off JAWS there is no interference with the word spoken in
the Dictionary.
