Open the keyboard manager which you can find in the insert + F2 dialogue
box. Once you open the keyboard manager press control plus shift+D to open
the default keystrokes. Press the letter S to get to the scripts that start
with the letter S. Start pressing down arrow and till you find "speak
selected text". JFW should report the keystroke that is assigned to this
script. If there is not one it will say unassigned. If it says unassigned
press control+A to add a keystroke to the script. If there is a keystroke
already assigned to the script press control+H to change the keystroke to
the keystroke you would like to use instead.

I hope this helps.

Chris.

I get verbal feedback from other keystrokes when in Keyboard help mode and I
have tried every combination that I can think of using the shift, ins and
down arrow, but the only time I get silence is when I use these three
together. How frustrating. It doesn't seem that a key not working would
have this result.

Do you get verbal feedback from other keystrokes when in Keyboard help mode?
Could it be a key on your keyboard that is not working properly?

Cheers
Chris

I am using beginner verbosity level. .
When in Keyboard help mode, Jaws does not speak out details of the shift
insert down arrow keystroke when I press it. What can I try next? Guess I
might have to just not tell my student there is supposed to be such a
keystroke.
Cheers
Thanks for your reply and if you have any further suggestions, I would
really appreciate hearing them. It is embarrassing when you are supposed to
be teaching and don't have answers.

What verbosity level are you using? It's Insert 1 for Keyboard help and
yes, shift insert down arrow should read out all the selected text. .

When in Keyboard help mode, does Jaws speak out details of the shift insert
down arrow keystroke when you press it?

Cheers
Chris

Yes, there is text selected and when I use shift insert down arrow, I hear
nothing. When I checked the keystroke after using insert 2 for keyboard
help, I just got silence. Out of curiosity, I unloaded JFW 7 and loaded
4.51 and the same was true there. In both programs, when I used the control
a to select all text, jaws would start reading all of that text. But, when
I select by shift down arrow a couple of times for selecting lines, as I
shift down arrow, jaws will read those lines and say they are selected. So,
jaws will only say what is selected as it is selected Am I right that insert
shift down arrow is supposed to read all text that is selected?

Hope I am making myself clear.

Hi Donna,
Are you sure that there is text selected when trying this command?

Are you getting any kind of feedback?

Have you tried to lock the keyboard into help mode with insert + 1 and
trying that keyboard command?

You have exactly the same configuration as I do and have not run into this
problem.

I am using Windows XP Home, JFW 7, MS Word 2002. I have not used this
feature for a long time, but when I select text, then try to use the read
selected text keystroke, which is supposed to be shift insert down arrow,
nothing happens. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. I am supposed
to teach selecting, cut copy and paste, but this keystroke does not work.
Help!!!
