Many products have come and gone. Whether it's cars or computers, apples or apricots, music systems or milking machines, the general rule is that you get what you pay for. To be sure, there are exceptions. Virtually every time I've opted for the cheaper or free version of something, I've been disappointed. It is just hard to scale back. The things we think are bells and whistles almost inevitably include functionality that makes life better. I thought about switching to System Access, but when I inquired of their technical support about track change support in Word, no one even knew what I was talking about. I was promised a return call when tech support found someone who knew about track changes. I never got a call back. I've only been back to JAWS for about 3 months, after a three-year stint with Window-Eyes. JAWS just makes things better and faster, and the script language is a breeze. I never got the hang of scripts in Window-Eyes -- too much like real computing. If the price of JAWS is an economic hardship, I think I understand, but if not, avoiding the hassle of learning new commands with a new screen reader, for me, is more than worth the price. Plus, I haven't even come close to mastering everything JAWS has to offer. I don't think I'm going anywhere very soon. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Nikki B. Sent: Saturday, October 02, 2010 3:33 PM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Question about Jaws vs. NVDA Hi everyone, First, I want to apologize if this isn't an appropriate question for this list. I understand it is primarily a JAWS list . If any of you have info or opinions you could share with me though, perhaps you won't mind answering off-list? I am trying to determine how the free NVDA product compares with JAWS for basic screen reading. I don't use most of the bells and whistles of JAWS anyway and am wondering if I should re-new my SMA agreement. If NVDA will do most of what JAWS does, I am thinking that may be just as good for my needs. I have never used it though and have my doubts whether it is as functional as JAWS. Any suggestions or thoughts about this will be appreciated. Have a great day!
