Hi Ray,

I am trying to help someone who is having a problem opening attachments
she receives in Outlook Express. She is a JFW user. She can open up
the message with the attachment, press insert-A to get to the
attachments list, but when she presses enter on the attachment she wants
to open nothing happens. Any thoughts on how we can fix this for her?

Odds are that the problem is with the Outlook Express settings and not operator error. In Outlook Express V6, Microsoft presumptuously decided to do something to save us from ourselves by preventing us from unwittingly opening attachments which could be potentially harmful. This gives everyone who's new to Outlook Express fits. Here's the deal on how to solve the problem.

Go into the Tools Menu and into Options, which is a multi-page dialog. Navigate to the Security page. Tab a little ways into the dialog and you'll find a checkbox that says:

"Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could
potentially be a virus"."

If this item is checked, uncheck it with the space bar and click OK.

That should take care of the problem. If not, then we need to look at other factors which may be at work here.

Hope this helps.

Tom
