The only thing I haven't tried in your list of suggestions is reinstalling. I really bhope I don't have to do that as I will have to call them up for that stupid activation number again. I think there are 100 digits.

Make sure you're in the JAWS window (INSERT+J) to if you wish to open the Basics options. Have you tried turning off and on your Braille display, then reloading JAWS? Try reinstalling JAWS, not the authorization key.
