Since some people might be new to MSConfig, I thought I should mention the
following. Anytime you uncheck something in MSConfig, the next time you
restart, you will get the message (below). This is okay and is normal.
Because if you did uncheck something windows needs, then yes it could cause
problems, that is true. But you knew what you were doing and unchecked
something you didn't want to start with windows, smile. So just tab and
check the box that says don't show this message againand then enter on okay.
I agree, if you can find the option in the program or proccess to not have
it start with windows, then that is what you should try first. But some
things want to start without you having any control over it, this is where
MSConfig comes in handy.

System Configuration Uti...
You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way
Windows starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective
Startup mode, causing
this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows
starts.
Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally
and undo the
changes you made using the System Configuration Utility.
Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when
Windows start
OK

The best source I have found for what to have start with windows and what is
not necessary is at:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
You can have it show all items, or by letter, or there is a search edit
field you can type the entry you are interested in finding out about.

Debbie I am running XP pro and there is a lot of stuff in the msconfig list.
What all has to run at start up in XP pro? I know that there are a few
things that I want to run but there is so much that I don't know what it is
or what programs that it is connected to.

Okay, I want to make sure that people understand this.
MSConfig (from the run men) is used to uncheck the items you don't want to
run at start up.
But even when you do this, the item remains in the MSConfig list.
MSConfig cleanup (the program), is used to remove these left over entries
from the MSConfig list.
Now to your question. It won't affect your antivirus from loading in any
way unless you purposely uncheck your antivirus application in MSConfig. I
don't know why you would want to do that though. The only things that are
affected are the things you uncheck in MSConfig. And those are the only
items that will show up in the MSConfig cleanup program.

Would there be any problem if I'm going to clear my Ms. Config?

If I'm going to clear my Ms. Config, does my anti virus will not load after
I start my windows and same with the other programs?

Jerry, do you mean the MSConfig Cleanup program itself? When I tab I only
hear the buttons and a listview. I selected all the text in the virtual
viewer and I got the following. I'm not sure what you mean by what the
menu
entries do. There is no menu in the progam.
  Scoffing Cleanup
  AboutMSConfig Cleanup
Check out the items you want removed.
Then click 'Clean Up' to proceed. www.get-in-control.com
  Application File Path
There are no disabled startup items in MSConfig
Select All Deselect All Clean Up Selected Quit

      Hello Debbie.

I agree with you about all the junk in msconfig. In fact, when Tracy at
  Freedom Scientific and I wer trouble-shooting a problem I was having, I
was quite surprised to find I could turn off everything I had in there.

One question, at the top of the window it gives a web address
purportedly to check what those menu entries do. I copied it with the
Jaws cursor only to find it was the home page. Am I wrong in how I read
  that?

Thanks for bringing this one up.

I know that there are some of you out there who are as obsessive
  compulsive
as I am, smile, because you have written me about this before. You can
delete these entries from your registry. But I just found a freeware
program that does it and is jaws friendly.

  MSConfig Cleanup
MSConfig is a small and helpful tool. It allows you
disable programs which are starting with Windows.
Unfortunately you can only disable items but they
remain in the list. MSConfig Cleanup lets you remove
  the residue!
