Yardbird.

About links in Word that you think don't activate. It could be that you're not really positioned on the link. When arrowing up or down and Jaws says Hyperlink when you come to a line that is a link, try arrowing left or right to make sure you are actually on the link itsef. Also, although I'm not sure if this is necessary in this case, but it might be, make sure Background Open of Web Pages is checked under Tools, Options, General tab.

Not sure if that's what your problem is, but it's a good start.

Jean

Not as far as I know. I've never done anything deliberately to allow this
to happen. Here's something interesting, though; unlike on the Web or in
an email, when jaws announces a link in a Word document and I click on it,
it doesn't ncessarily activate. But that's another issue, and not one I
have much concern about although I'd be curious to understand what's
happening.

Hello Yardbird:

JAWS doesn't announce links in Word documents for me, but it does online.
What settings are there in JAWS to allow it to read links in Word documents?
Do I also have to modify a setting in Word?

yes. Jaws should simply say "link," the way it does when it encounters an
active link online or within an email message. It works this way on my
computer, anyway (XP Home, Word 2000, Jaws 6.2). Aren't links speaking
for
you, this way?

Hello list members:

When reading Word documents line by line with the up and down arrows or
using Say All, is there a way to have JAWS tell you when links are
encountered?
