Hi,

I read your posting with interest since I have been going the same way
myself. First of all a few comments. Re. the packmate I agree 100%, in =
fact,
I would add another objection, I think it has all the makings of a real
dynasaur in 2 or 3 years time. I think it is only justified for Braille
users. If all you want are the standard PDA facilities + a mobile phone =
then
a smart phone with is what you need. I have a Nokia 6600 with Talks and =
I
can assure you that Talks is definitely not just recreational. It gives =
me
all the facilities that I would get from a decent PDA. As with a PDA, =
the
problem is the keyboard. You are not going to write reports or even more
than the sketchiest e-mail on it (this is the same for any PDA). Of =
course
you can buy a folding blue-ttooth keyboard but this is one more thing to
carry. What I really want is a pocket computer that runs Windows xp so =
that
I can run Jaws and all my other applications, which can then be =
connected to
a standard keyboard and monitor, at home, making it a desk machine. I =
think
I have found the right solution, the OQO 001 Ultra. Go to www.OQO.com =
and
read all about it. There are, however, still a few things that need to =
be
solved. First of all, it got a lousy writeup in PC World, saying it was
more of a prototype than a production model (nothing that cannot be =
solved
in the next version) More important, can Jaws be mapped to work with its
"thumb operated" keyboard? When I contacted OQO, they were very =
unhelpful
referring me to the information on their website, which,of course, I had
already read. I think we ought to start a group to sort out the above
problems and post the results on this list

Ciao,

Ron.

Subject: JAWS and Pocket PC

If you are not interested in using JAWS on anything smaller, lighter, =
and m=3D
ore portable than a laptop, then delete this without reading further.
It=3DE2=3D80=3D99s been a year since I commenced my search for a talking =
PDA phon=3D
e. I=3DE2=3D80=3D99m no closer than I was a year ago.
What I=3DE2=3D80=3D99m wondering is whether the absence of a Pocket PC =
version of=3D
 JAWS is a technical or an economic matter.
Actually, we know a version of JAWS for the Pocket PC operating system =
does=3D
 exist -- the PacMate.
The PacMate, however, is virtually the size of a laptop and cannot =
double a=3D
s a cell phone.  For me, that=3DE2=3D80=3D99s a non-starter.
It seems so ludicrous to carry around both a PC and a cell phone. Many =
of =3D
my sighted friends do, but they are quickly switching over to PDA phones =
--=3D
 even though they hate giving up their Blackberries.
I looked at VisuAide=3DE2=3D80=3D99s Maestro, but I=3DE2=3D80=3D99m not =
really sure it =3D
is ready for prime time. It certainly lacks cell phone functionality, =
and =3D
there is no browser yet.
Alva has a unit, but it costs as much as a small car, and the Braille =
Note =3D
PK, from Pulse Data, is over the top in terms of expense.
I looked into the TALKS software for smarter cell phones, but it runs =
only =3D
on the Symbion (sp) operating system, which is fine for less than truly =
ser=3D
ious business types, but is more recreational than commercial.
So, there remain all those Pocket PC devices out there that =
won=3DE2=3D80=3D99t t=3D
alk. JAWS could solve that problem, but if Freedom Scientific is wedded =
to=3D
 the business model of the proprietary, single use, vastly over-priced =
and =3D
over-sized piece of hardware, I guess we will remain stuck.
If the problem is technical, then I guess I can understand, but somehow =
I s=3D
uspect it isn=3DE2=3D80=3D99t just a technical matter.
