Hi Ann: Glad it worked. Unfortunately, if the video intercept was the problem, and removing it got it working again, then I'm not sure that loading jaws on his laptop is going to work at any point in the future (as the video intercept would go back in, and you'd probably go right back to the same old problems). Even running jaws on a thumb drive on his laptop isn't a viable option, as that still needs the video intercept loaded on his laptop, and thus, same old problem. It looks like you're only option is to use another screenreader on his laptop that doesn't require a video intercept, such as System Access. (or others, I'm not sure which others don't require a video intercept, Window Eyes does, Not sure about NVDA, ect). System access is good because you can always download a temporary copy that you can use for as long as you want (from what I have seen), just by visiting www.satogo.com<http://www.satogo.com> The voice is much better than Narrator, and it's an actual screenreader, so you can do a lot more with it than narrator. Also, the key commands are at least somewhat similar to Jaws, which will help you get going. Someone else on the list might have another option, or you could contact Freedom Scientific's tech support, they're the ones who should really have an answer. Good Luck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lorne Webber Assistive Technology Specialist Centre for Excellence in Learning Supports RM A524D NorQuest College 10215 - 108 Street, Edmonton, Alberta T5J 1L6 Telephone: [780] 644-6039 Fax: [780] 644-6065 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ann Tate Sent: Thursday, October 29, 2009 4:11 PM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Does JJaws10 change the windows vista appearance Hi, It worked, and he can now play his DVDs again. Thanks for the suggestions, folks. Now one more question. How can I re-install Jaws10 on his machine again without once more messing up his DVD playback functions? Thanks for the help. ~Ann On Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 5:39 PM, Lorne Webber <Lorne.Webber@xxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:Lorne.Webber@xxxxxxxxxxx>> wrote: Hi Ann: Here's a possibility. I've noticed a time or 2 in vista where windows media player pops up a similar message when I'm trying to play a DVD, and I'm pretty sure it's related to vista's draconian (and might I add, worthless) anti-piracy measures. I won't get into the background of this, however there's a possibility that when you removed jaws, the jaws video intercept might not have been uninstalled. One way to check this, is to go into device manager (ctrl panel, system), and look under the display adapters. If you see Freedom Scientific Mirror Display driver in there, then try removing it via ctrl panel \ programs and settings. (if it's listed in device manager, then it should be in your list of installed programs under Programs and settings, and vice versa). Let us know how it goes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lorne Webber Assistive Technology Specialist Centre for Excellence in Learning Supports RM A524D NorQuest College 10215 - 108 Street, Edmonton, Alberta T5J 1L6 Telephone: [780] 644-6039 Fax: [780] 644-6065 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>] On Behalf Of Ann Tate Sent: Thursday, October 29, 2009 3:16 PM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Does JJaws10 change the windows vista appearance Hi folks, We are having a problem with my nephews two month old Toshiba Satellite Windows Vista laptop. Since I installed Jaws 10 on it yesterday so I could borrow it for a time and not have to put up with using narrator, he can no longer playd DVD movies. The message: Playback in desktop environment is not supported always pops up and the DVD won't play. could J10 have done something to the windows display or appearance scheme that might cause this problem? And, if so, how can it be fixed? I uninstalled Jaws, but the error message is still there. The drive works fine. He is able to burn CDS, se the DVD contents listed in Explorer and so forth. I can even play the DVD audio using DVD Audio Extractor, so I'm almost possitive it isn't a bad DVD rom drive. It isn't a bad DVD disk either as we have tried various different DVDs, but with the same results. Thanks for any advice. ~Ann
