A little addendum to what Chris said about the FN key... On laptops the Function row keys as well as the cursor movement keys are assigned a function when those keys are pressed in combination with the FN key. For example, no my laptop if I press FN with F4 the computer goes into sleep mode. If I press FN with F2 it turns the wireless network card on and off. And the volume is controlled with FN plus Up and Down arrows. Every laptop I've worked with has different distinctions. If you don't know what your keys are assigned to, just call the help desk support for the company that makes the laptop and ask the customer support person to tell you how they are used. As Chris said, the FN key combined with 7, 8, 9, U, I, O and J, K, L etc. behave as a number keypad, but this is a horribly inefficient way to type numbers.

Also, I haven't been following this thread very carefully, but usually if I want to disable or in some way change how my touchpad works, I select Mouse from the Control Panel and there is a TAB sheet in that dialog box that lets me control its features. This is somewhat dependent on the type of laptop you are dealing with.

Hope some of this helps.

The FN key is to simulate the numerical keypad found on a desktop keyboard or a number pad. FN I believe means function, but it's not the same as keys like F1, F2, F3, etc.

What does FN stand for?

Is it another name for Function Key?

On my netbook Acer Aspire One it is FN plus F7 to switch between on and
off!
