Hello Dave,
I am considering that option, but as I have some client work to get done,
and this problem has plagued me in the midst of that since March 4th, I
probably will not be attempting this before the middle of next week or
later. I have experienced the same success with doing a complete clean
re-install of a strangely buggy system and then had the system run just fine
with no problems, so I hear where you're coming from. It is certainly
something I want to try before resorting to shipping the system off to HP
for diagnostics. I had tried everything with the problem Dell laptop prior
to contacting Dell, and after explaining everything I had done to
troubleshoot the system, the tech agreed with me that I had done everything
on my end that I could, and immediately got on the ball helping me to get
the system back to Dell for a diagnostic. I haven't explored all my options
on my end yet, so rushing the system back to HP is not called for yet, as
has been suggested to me by another list member. I certainly understand the
need to do this, but until I have explored every option on my end, I'd
rather not need to go through that process if I can avoid it.

Do you suggest using a Microsoft branded Windows XP or the Windows XP CD
included with the HP? My experience there has been that sometimes the
vendor brands and customizes the Windows XP setup and it's often hard to
tell if using that CD to reinstall won't simply re-introduce the problem. I
have a Microsoft branded Windows XP, but it is before SP1 or SP2, so SP2
would need to be put in after the initial install. I have SP2 on CD due to
working on unattended setups, so that's no problem. Just curious which CD
you would suggest to use when I get to that point.
-Greg
