While I'll agree that laptops have come a long way, there is no way a laptop can come close to the speed, data storage, and flexibility of most bigger desk tops today. The truth lies some where in between your post and the one you are responding to.

Sorry, I see no reasoning behind this, and really can't follow what
you're saying. You somehow think laptops are so fragile that they can't
be used much? I don't know if that was true at one time, but it's not
true today.

There are companies today that buy *only* laptops for all employees.
They've improved so much, that they are indistinguishable in
capabilities from a desktop if you want to pay for the ones with larger
screens. They certainly can operate just as much.

They are more fragile in that they can be dropped, where a desktop is
unlikely to have that happen to it; they can also be stolen if you take
it out of your house. Other than that, there's no need for such a
vague, but alarmist, warning as the one you gave.

Don't believe me? Go ask the experts on the news group
comp.sys.laptops; a lot of these guys are the IT shop support or
purchasing folks, and they know quite a bit about laptops.

Hi,
While a lap top is a good idea if this is going to be your only system
and your main system it is not a good idea. Lap tops get a
lot of ware
and tair using them as a main system. If you are going to get a laptop
you should also have a desktop. You will extend the life of your
laptop by doing this.

Heidi,

Sorry if I'm duplicating other info; I see you have 27 messages
already!!!

Before you concentrate on make and model, I'd really suggest you think
hard about whether you want a desktop or a laptop. That decision is
much more important to your future use of the pc than which brand you
settle on.

I want to argue strongly for a laptop. Whatever brand you
choose, it's
portable, you can get wifi card with it, and a wireless internet setup
at home, and take it anywhere that's convenient. Not just
home, but if
you need to go work at a friends house, in the car while waiting on
someone, etc., a laptop is just great.

They've improved steadily so that all their capabilities are quite
comparable to desktop pcs these days.

If you get convinced to buy a particular brand, as I did, it's almost
certain that they make a laptop as well as a desktop.

If you decide on a laptop, and want to talk more about the fine points
of what to buy, perhaps starting a separate thread on laptops would be
best.

Hth,

Chip
