Actually you can. But it requires that the hidden folders, that the ipod usually does not display when hooked up to the computer, be made visible. Then it should be possible to use the ipod like you would an external harddrive and move files back and forth. There is also software to let you back up your ipod contents. For regular updating of your music though I think it will work better, as in not as many steps involved, to just go ahead and use itunes where you can have your settings and playlists all updated easily.
