Hi, Diana.
I've been using JAWS on IBM mainframes through several generations of mvs
and os390 and have had good years and bad ones.
Early on I used Attachmate Extra version 6.0 and eventually had to change
my client a couple of times.
The IBM HOD (host on demand) fat client works quite well with every
generation of JAWS from 5.1 through 9 for me. I also tested Rumba and it
seemed to work well but since we already owned the HOD fat client there was
really no benefit in buying something different.
I've been using the generic terminal emulation scripts written by Glen
Sepke but have modified them pretty substantially to meet my particular
needs.
I have been experiencing some instabilities with JAWS 9 at present but I
think it is unrelated to the mainframe. More likely it has to do with
Outlook and the ever increasing layers of security and Mcafee enterprise.
You might want to ask your it person to talk with Freedom Scientific tech
support about the situation. One thing which can give problems is if the
video drivers are not working well with the video chaining manager.
Sometimes a video driver update and a re-install of JAWS can improve things
a lot.
As Kenneth mentioned, you do need to use a blinking underline cursor. In
the configuration manager there are cursor settings such as how long Jaws
will spend waiting for things to stablize which can improve performance Try
increasing that substantially. It won't be a timing difference you will
subjectively notice very much but it may improve how well JAWS works.
I can probably find an unmodified copy of Glen's scripts for you and send
them off list if you like. Probably won't happen till Saturday but can do
if you wish.

Regards,
Wayne
