As John says... you'll have to do this for each message.
There's no need to copy them further to an external drive, but if you do
as suggested, you can then copy that whole new folder to it using the
usual copy commands.
It's safer to plug the external drive in before powering up, but it
really doesn't matter.  Depends how cautious you are.

Hi Paul. To save your emails to a folder on your hard drive do as
follows:
1 make a folder on your hard drive or wherever you want to store your 
emails.
2 open the email, press alt to open the menus, and on the file menu you
will 
find save as. Press enter on that. The name of the email can be changed
to 
whatever you want it to be.
3 tab to the save in combo box and browse to the folder you've created,
then 
tab to the save button.
