Brilliant Graham, thanks very much. Very helpful. Only remaining question
would be around necessary memory, or is that implicit in the ultrabook
recommend?
Oh, and where should I be looking in terms of a potentially useful vendor?
I'm a fan of Sony so should I maybe go straight to them, or other
manufacturers, rather than a general retailer?
Thanks again for your help.
A x

Hi Amie.

I've not seen much in the way of replies to this so here goes.

Many modern laptops are quite powerful. Many will I am sure suit your
needs. the more urgent issue to consider though is the operating system.
Windows 8.1 is the latest version but one criticism of this which I think
most agree with is that Windows 8.1 tries to merge the needs of those with
touch screens with those who use a more traditional style desktop
environment. There is a lot that can be done to make the environment easier
but yu may want to consider getting a machine with windows 7 if you want to
avoid a bit of a learning curve. Many suppliers can still arrange this but
you won't get much joy out of high street vendors such as PC World.

You would probably be aiming for a class of laptops known these days as
Ultrabooks. I'm not sure which would be best though I have heard it said
that toshiba machines are not as robust as they used to be. I'd start
myself considering samsung, asus, HP or Sony but I am sure others can advise
you better than me on these specifics.

Regards

Graham

Subject: [jaws-uk] New laptop advice request

Hi list
Thinking it's time to replace my laptop before it conks out on me. I'd be
grateful for advice re exactly what to get, and ideally from where. I like
Toshebas but am not sure it's sensible to just rush for another without
asking you lot first.

I like the screen, and therefore the machine, to be as small as possible.
I've been running JAWS 10 but will look at upgrading with the new laptop, so
what models might suit me, in terms of memory etc?

Thanks very much for any and all advice.

Amie
