You either need to educate your recipients in how to open them despite
the warnings, or open them yourself in a recent version of Office and
resave them before sending. Office 2007 seems to be OK for this.
I am wondering if I have come across a related or similar problem - in
reverse. Sometimes when I receive MS Word files they demand a password
to be opened (on Iyonix, 5.18, Easiwriter 9.00). But can be opened
without fuss by my "children" using MS office. Is there something I
can request of the sender to make these files universally readable?

Are these files *.doc or *.docx ? The latter is an XML format file.
Easiwriter 8.90 and onwards should be able to handle them, but this may be
why you need a password and MS Office doesn't.
Suggest to your 'contacts' perhaps that they use *.doc instead, or perhaps
*.rtf if there isn't too much fancy formatting in the original.
