Intermittently I think.

No.

I've tried it again and it seems okay playing through with SoundCon
although if you try to skip through in segments by clicking on the
green progress bar it alternates between inaudible and audible, or
seems to.

The volume "cycling" seemed irregular and infrequent but made the
sample far too loud at intervals. Perhaps it was tape weaving as you
say but if I tried to multitask the first time I wonder if that would
have caused the effect?

No they were definitely sharp.

The tape is okay but it's a recording from the RiscPC headphones
socket of an MP3 recording whose file I've unfortunately deleted. So
there's a lot of hiss on the tape. The gain on AudioIn was about 75%.
However I'm confused - the Microphone setting in Configure is on
"mute" but I still get a recording yet the instructions for audio in
say for Gain:

"This allows finer control over the volume of the microphone input.
This setting is independent of the Microphone volume set
     using
Configure, which only applies to the Mix inputs."

So what is gain and what does the Microphone volume in Configure do?
